Charlie Delta - Maker

I am a Maker

Charlie and Delta are my initials using the phonetic alphabet, which my Dad taught me when I was a child. I use them as my username for my maker accounts.

I am a Maker and I am proud to be part of this wonderful and supportive international community.

The community is fully inclusive; it doesn’t matter who you are, what you make, what you make it from, or how big or small it is there is a place within the community for you.

We are all indulging our passions and provide support and advice while sharing our successes and failures with others around the world using Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. We meet at events like Makers Central where friendships are made with other makers from all around the world that we would not have normally met.

I enjoy making and building items that I need or want out of wood, metal, electronics, or anything else, if necessary I will try to do this by reengineering, repairing, repurposing or upcycling broken or worn out things giving them a new lease of life. I have made furniture, my workshop stereo/benchtop PSU, workbenches, jewellery, and tools. I like the idea of upcycling and repurposing items that most people would deem rubbish and throw away.

I particularly enjoyed stripping, renovating and rebuilding the frame and engine of my first motorcycle. I have plans to buy a bike to completely renovate and rebuild at some point in the future. I have also modified and upgraded many of the guitars that I own.

In 2013 I bought my first house which I am currently renovating and modernising.

You may notice, for example in the pictures of me with the other makers, that I am not so comfortable in front of the camera, despite this at some point in the future I will expand this page to a complete site.

"Spiffed" on the Fools With Tools Podcast

I know it's not something that most people care about, but if you're here and reading this then there is a good chance that you're a maker.

Hosted by Steve from Moonshine Metal Works (Instagram and YouTube), Al from Al's Hack Shack (Instagram and YouTube), and Brett from Skull & Spades 13 (Instagram and YouTube), the Fools With Tools podcast is one of the favourites in the Maker circles, encouraging a positive and supportive community around it.

Every week at the end of the episode they all take turns to give their recommendations in the "People that we think that are Spiffing" section. In episode 89 "Potentially Valuable" to my complete surprise Steve chose me. In the previous weeks episode Steve mentioned how he had showed a little girl at Makers Central 2019 how to blacksmith using some plasticine instead of hot metal (for Health & Safety reasons), I happened to take a couple of pictures of this so I posted them on my Instagram feed to give some context to his story for the listeners. With Steve's help he was able to connect me with the father of the little girl who did not manage to get any pictures of it, of course I was only too happy to send him the high-resolution copies of the images.

You can listen to the section on their Soundcloud site by clicking here.

I highly recommend the podcast to anyone looking for a new podcast to listen to.

A Shoutout on the Make Your Own Way Podcast

Again, it's not something that most people care about, but I also got a shoutout from the guys on the Make Your Own Way Podcast.

Hosted by Alan from Wood Turning by Alan Scannell (Instagram and YouTube), Jonny from Bespoke Bloke Designs (Instagram and IrishCustomKnives.com), and Nate from SimplyOrn8 (Instagram), the Make Your Own Way podcast is another of my favourite podcasts to listen to in the workshop each week and always gives me a good laugh.

You can listen to the section on their Soundcloud site by clicking here.

Another podcast that I highly recommend to anyone that enjoys making, a bit of warning though, this podcast is extremely adult themed and is definitely not suitable for young ears or for a work environment.
